Organic Seedling Rhubarb 'Livingstone'
A rhubarb that pushes the boundaries of the season.
'Livingstone' breaks with convention: unlike classic varieties that disappear at the summer solstice, it keeps growing cheerfully through to autumn and sometimes even delivers a more abundant harvest as temperatures cool. No more rushing to freeze kilos of stems before the end of the season: with 'Livingstone', you simply cut as needed, throughout the entire growing period. A generous rhubarb that stands proudly in the garden with its large leaves from spring right through to the first frosts.
Growing instructions
Stems: Long stems of medium thickness, beautiful and striking red-pink exterior colouring, green interior with a touch of pink
Harvest: In spring from mid/late April, then in summer and autumn through to October. We offer robust plants, but it is preferable not to harvest rhubarb in the year of planting and to wait until the second year, to allow the plant to establish itself well.
Flavour: Fine rhubarb flavour, milder than early, purely green varieties.
Use: Cooking, purées and cakes; be careful not to use the leaves — use only the stems!
Cultivation: After an establishment phase of 1 to 2 years, 'Livingstone' can be harvested throughout the year. As a rule, never harvest more than one third of the fully developed stems, and at most at intervals of approximately 3 weeks (and only if you can see that sufficient new stems are developing), otherwise the plant risks losing its capacity to regenerate, remain vigorous.
