Seedling, Eggplant, Pink Lady
Solanum melongena
Earliest eggplant for our climate! Pink Lady is sleek, long (30 cm), and delicate with deep pink colouration. Could you ask for a more ladylike fruit! As you could expect, the taste is very fine as well. This strong plant provides regular and high yield until well into autumn. It is the earliest and one of the latest. Height reaches up to 100 cm. Pink Lady catches eyes from all in the vegetable market. Be sure not to sell them all; reserve some to display and bring buyers to your stand.
Sow in the beginning to the end of February in warm seedling trays. Young seedlings are ready to transplant when they span 5 cm from the potting tray to the tip. They adapt well to pots or the field when danger from frost is gone. Transplant into a greenhouse in early May or into the field in mid-May. Cover with garden fleece and then tie stalks to a stake. Always pinch off the first bloom of flowers to ensure sturdy stalks and deep rooting.
